Roseanna Welcomes Cash Boost for Affordable Housing

Roseanna Cunningham, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perthshire South &  Kinross-shire, has today (Wednesday) welcomed the announcement of funding being made available for Perth and Kinross Council to build affordable homes. The funding is part of a £40m cash pot to help families into hundreds of new social homes, announced by Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.

Ms Cunningham said:

"The announcement of new funding for social housing is fantastic news, particularly at a time where the worst-off families are being hardest hit by the UK Government.

"I am delighted to see that £1.5m is being made available to Perth and Kinross Council.  This is money that will help the Council to provide safe and secure tenancies for people and will also provide employment opportunities for local businesses.

"The supply of new affordable housing remains a high priority for the Scottish Government, which has made clear its commitment to deliver at least 30,000 affordable homes, of which at least two thirds will be for social rent including 5,000 council houses, during the lifetime of this Parliament.

"When you consider that, under Labour and the Lib Dems, only six  – yes, six – Council houses were built in the whole of Scotland between 2003 and 2007, the scale of the improvement that has been brought about in the provision of social housing under the SNP becomes very clear."
