Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP has welcomed the announcement by the Cabinet Secretary for Transport, Michael Matheson, in the Scottish Parliament that ScotRail services will move into public-sector control when the current franchise with Abellio expires in March 2022.  Rail services will be run by an arm’s length company owned and controlled by the Scottish Government.

Ms Cunningham said:

“I very much welcome the Cabinet Secretary’s announcement today. It is a bold move by the SNP Scottish Government and one which will bring welcome stability and certainty to those who use our railway for work and leisure, both in my constituency and across the country.

“It was really good, too, to hear that current ScotRail staff will transfer to the new company owned by the Scottish Government, with their terms and conditions protected.  I know that this will provide much-needed security to those who rely on our railways for their livelihoods.

“So much of what needs improved in terms of infrastructure is under the remit of Network Rail, which remains under Westminster control, and I urge all Labour MSPs to change track and get on board with the need to alter that.

“What our railway network needs now is to uncouple from Westminster, for all rail powers to be devolved to Holyrood so that Scotland’s parliament can determine the future direction of Scotland’s railways."
