Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP has welcomed the launch this week of a new fund to support taxi and private hire drivers affected by the pandemic.

She said:

“Like so many other sectors of the economy, the taxi trade in Perthshire South & Kinross-shire has been facing increased costs and reduced income as a result of this pandemic.  They also face the added concern of being in close proximity, in an enclosed space, with their customers.

“After the introduction of tighter regulations at Christmas, the Scottish Government has trebled the budget originally announced and there is now a fund of £57 million available, enough to provide grants of £1,500 to every one of Scotland’s taxi and private hire drivers.

“There is no need for drivers to submit an application as Council officials will approach those eligible inviting them to provide details for payment.  I hope that this payment will be a help with meeting fixed costs such as licence plate fees and insurance payments and goes some way to making these very difficult times a little bit easier.”

Note: To be eligible for this financial assistance taxi or private hire drivers must be licensed for the period 9 October 2020 to at least 31 January 2021. Applicants can choose whether the payment is made to a business or personal bank account.

More details and full eligibility criteria available here.

Other schemes open to taxi drivers include the Scottish Government’s COVID-19 Public Transport Mitigation Fund and the UK Government’s Self-Employment Income Support Scheme.

The Scottish Government has allocated £3 billion in business support since the start of the pandemic on top of support available through the UK Government.
