Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP has hit out at the findings of a report which shows that online shoppers in her constituency are being ripped off by delivery companies charging extra to deliver to the region.

A report by the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPICe) found Scots were being left out of pocket to the tune of millions of pounds, with people in Perthshire South & Kinross-shire being charged £1,026,000 extra in parcel delivery surchages, relative to other parts of the UK.

Across Scotland, more than £43.1 million extra is spent by online shoppers on delivery surcharges - an increase of £6.7 million in the past three years.

Roseanna said:

“It is absolutely ridiculous that people in Perthshire South & Kinross-shire are having to pay over the odds for deliveries – more than a £1 million more than others in Scotland and elsewhere in the UK.

“At present it is up to the UK Government to regulate parcel delivery but they refuse to do so, despite all the evidence, and the charges continue to sky-rocket.  Across Scotland as a whole, these charges have gone up by £6.7 million in the past three years.

“Whilst I am frequently encouraging people to shop locally, whenever they can, I acknowledge that there are some things that have to be delivered, and there can be no doubt that during the Covid-19 pandemic many have relied on online shopping in one way or another.

“People should not be penalized purely on postcode alone – it is manifestly unfair.  Even if you accept the argument – which I firmly do not – that some parts of the country should be charged more because of difficulties in delivering there, it is ludicrous that communities in Perthshire South & Kinross-shire should be included in that category.

“Parts of my constituency are rural, yes, but they can in no way be described as ‘far-flung’, ‘remote’ or ‘inaccessible’.  This is the heart of Scotland and these surcharges are an unfair imposition.

"Now, more than ever, delivery charges across the UK should be fair, consistent and transparent, and companies should not be allowed to randomly extort money out of their customers for reasons that are frankly spurious.”
