Perth Recruitment Office in Westminster's Sights

The Scottish National Party's Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament representing Perthshire South & Kinross-shire, has expressed her concern about news that since May 2010 fourteen of Scotland's nineteen Army recruiting centres have closed or have been earmarked for closure, including the one in Perth.

Speaking today (Thursday) Ms Cunningham said:

"This information, confirmed in a parliamentary answer, highlights the extent to which the recruitment to the Scottish regiments is being seriously undermined.

"The Scottish infantry has traditionally depended on strong local links such as those that exist in Perthshire with the Black Watch and the removal of so many local recruitment offices, including the one in Perth really destabilises that important connection.

"What this news also does is confirm that disproportionate defence cuts are continuing in Scotland. Nearly three-quarters of all Army offices in Scotland will be closed by the end of next month while across the UK, the average is just over half.

"Only recently the Ministry of Defence confirmed that military personnel cuts in Scotland have run at three times the rate of the rest of the UK, while a massive defence spend has opened up in Scotland totalling at least £7.4 billion in the last ten years.

"It is clear for all to see that Westminster is making damaging decisions about defence in Scotland. Only after a 'Yes' vote in the 2014 referendum will we have a government that delivers appropriate conventional defence decisions for Scotland"
