Today, Monday 25 May 2020, is the 25th anniversary of the historic Perth & Kinross by-election which resulted in the election of Roseanna Cunningham for the first time.

Ms Cunningham was re-elected at the 1997 General Election for the redrawn and renamed constituency of Perth. On the establishment of the Scottish Parliament, Ms Cunningham was elected as the MSP for Perth in 1999, re-elected to represent that constituency in 2003 and 2007, then the redrawn and renamed constituency of
Perthshire South & Kinross-shire in 2011 and 2016.  With that continuous quarter of a century representing Perthshire constituents, Roseanna is now the longest-serving, current Scottish parliamentarian.

Fellow Perthshire parliamentarians have been commenting on today’s anniversary. Mr John Swinney MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Perthshire North constituency, said:

“Warmest congratulations to Roseanna on the 25th anniversary of her stunning victory in the Perth and Kinross by-election, for making history by being the first SNP MP to hold a by-election gain in a General Election, and now Scotland’s longest-serving parliamentarian.

“In those 25 years she has been an excellent advocate for her constituents, an outstanding representative of the cause, a great Minister in the Scottish Government and, above all else, a great colleague and friend.”

Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire, added:

“It has been an incredible 25 years since my colleague Roseanna Cunningham was first elected in her stunning by-election victory in Perth & Kinross. Much has changed in the political world since then, but Roseanna remains a formidable and dedicated politician who has had the interests of Perth and Kinross at her heart for the last 25 years.

“I have had the pleasure of having Roseanna as a colleague since I was first elected in 2001, but she has also become a close friend and I wish her all the best for many more years as an elected member.”

Mr John Nicolson MP, Member of Parliament for Ochil & South Perthshire, continued:

"Twenty-five years ago today, Perth and Kinross was won from the Tories. A milestone that would mark the ascent of the SNP and of Scotland’s journey toward independence. It is a privilege to work alongside Scotland’s longest continuously serving parliamentarian who works so hard for the people of Perth and Kinross. Many happy (parliamentary) returns."

Reflecting on 25 years as a parliamentary representative for Perthshire constituents, Ms Cunningham said:

“It really has been the most incredible honour and privilege to have represented the people of this area in two parliaments over the last twenty-five years.

“I hope that I have been worthy of the trust they have put in me and I want to thank everyone who has voted for me throughout the years, not to mention all the volunteers who have knocked doors, stuffed envelopes and delivered leaflets along the way.

“It is hard to believe that it has been a quarter of a century but, also, looking back, there have been huge changes in Scottish politics in that time. Nothing, though, in all of that time has been as challenging as the impact the coronavirus is having on all of our lives.

“Celebrations might be restricted just now to looking at old videos online and catching up with colleagues on Zoom, but I want to thank everyone who has sent me their good wishes and I look forward to continuing to work as hard as I can for those I represent.”
