Roseanna Welcomes Flood Warning System for Comrie

The Scottish National Party's Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perthshire South & Kinross-shire, has received a letter from SEPA indicating that their flood warning scheme for Comrie is now in place.

Ms Cunningham said:

"With the recent snows now melting, fear of a too fast thaw will have been preying on the minds of the people of Comrie who have experienced serious flooding twice already in the past year, so I am sure this news will be welcomed by local folk.

"Due to the nature of the Ruchill Water catchment area and the way in which it floods SEPA are warning that, in some circumstances, it may not be possible for them to provide warnings more than 30-60 minutes in advance although they will, of course, attempt to issue warnings as soon as possible.

"Any warning is better than no warning and I appreciate the fact that SEPA have responded positively to that message coming from the local community and agreed to put this service in place despite their usual policy of only doing so in circumstances where they are able to provide at least 3 hours warning of pending flooding.

"SEPA are contacting local householders informing them of the scheme and what to do to register and they are hosting a drop-in session at the White Church, from 2pm-6pm on Thursday 31 January, when their staff will be available to answer questions and help out with registration.

"Annabelle Ewing and I will ourselves be available for our previously advertised flooding surgery from 11.30-12.30 in the White Church on Friday 1 February. Anyone with any flooding related concerns is welcome to attend.

"Up until now SEPA's flood alerts have been too general to be of much use to people in Comrie so I hope that this development, along with the work which is ongoing to prevent flooding from occurring will give a bit for of security and some sense of control over their ability to protect their property and possessions."
