Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP has expressed her disappointment at the news that Virgin Money intend to close the Clydesdale Bank branch in Crieff.

Ms Cunningham said:

“This is very disappointing news indeed.  The rate at which bank branches are disappearing from our high streets appears to be accelerating at an exponential rate.

“On a purely commercial basis, I can understand the calculation that has been made.  There is absolutely no question that the manner in which the vast majority of us carry out our banking business has completely changed in recent years.

“The problem is that branch closures have the biggest effect on the elderly, the less well off and other disadvantaged groups who find it harder to engage with the new forms of banking and for whom travelling further away to another branch is not a simple matter.

“Small local businesses, too, with cash takings to deposit, will have to make other arrangements.

“I will be pressing Virgin Money as to whether there is a possibility of the ATM, at the very least, being retained."

Crieff councillor, Cllr Stewart Donaldson, added:

“This is really bad news for Crieff, with yet another local bank branch to close its doors for good.

“To be honest I am not surprised but I am saddened.  I am an ex-employee of the Clydesdale and my late father was the branch manager for many years of the Bank of Scotland in Auchterarder, whose closure was also announced recently, so I feel a personal connection to these closures.
“On the wider front it looks as though we are facing the loss, not only of the Clydesdale branch from Crieff, but also the Clydesdale Bank name itself, as I see a rebranding to Virgin Money in the near future.
“I share the concerns Roseanna has expressed about those customers who will be most affected by this closure and echo her desire to seek an agreement on the future of the cash machine.”
