Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP has welcomed new figures showing a significant fall in homelessness applications in Perth & Kinross.

The figures showed a decline in applications in the 12 months to September 2019 of 12%, as compared to the previous year, and in the most recent 6 months of that period by 32%, almost a third.  Indeed, for both time frames, the fall in homelessness applications in Perth & Kinross was the biggest in the whole country.

The Scottish Government has invested £32.5 million into Rapid Rehousing and Housing First to prioritise permanent, settled accommodation, as the first response to minimise the length of time people spend in temporary accommodation.

The Government also changed the Unsuitable Accommodation Order in 2014 so that families with children and pregnant women only stay in accommodation, such as B&Bs, for a maximum of seven days.

Commenting, Roseanna said:

“First and foremost, it has to be stated that everyone should have a home of their own, and any level of homelessness is too high.

“However, while we must not become complacent, it is very welcome indeed to note that the number of homelessness applications in Perth & Kinross has fallen and indeed, that the rate at which it has fallen here is the highest in the country.

“In government, the SNP has shown our determination to tackle homelessness and it really is fantastic to see such good progress being made on our £50 million Ending Homelessness Together Action Plan.

“Legislation to end the sale of council houses has meant that local councils are once more in a position to build homes that are available to rent at affordable levels.  Other policy initiatives, too, have been taken that are helping to tackle the levels of homelessness.

“It’s now vital that we do all we can to prevent homelessness in the first place, and ensure that when it does happen support is available to help folk move into settled accommodation quickly.”
