Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP has welcomed the publication by Perth Citizens Advice Bureau of "Mind over Money – A study of third party responses to the needs of debtors with mental health issues".

Ms Cunningham said:

“This study collates data and other evidence to back up something that might seem obvious to some but it is important to have both qualitative and quantitative evidence in this regard to help ensure that responses match the problem.

“It is clear that poor mental health can lead to debt issues and that debt issues can lead to poor mental health.  As the report puts it, problem debt and mental health exist in a relationship of mutual reinforcement.

“Companies offering credit and those seeking to recover debt need to demonstrate a far greater awareness and understanding of that relationship and show far more sensitivity when dealing with customers with mental health issues.

“I want to congratulate the Tayside Social Policy Team at Citizens Advice for undertaking this work and producing this excellent report and hope that the agencies to which it is addressed will respond positively to the issues raised.”
