Upward trend for Tayside as Police numbers hit an all time high

The Scottish National Party's Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perthshire South & Kinross-shire has welcomed the publication of recent figures which show that police numbers in Scotland have reached an all-time high.

Focussing on the situation within Tayside, Ms Cunningham said:

"The Scottish Government is meeting and surpassing our pledge to maintain the additional police numbers we committed to in our first term.

"It is really good news that, across Scotland, police numbers have hit an all time high, in excess of 1200 up on the number when we first came into office.

"In Tayside, the number of officers now stands at 1,235. That is a rise of 81 from the first quarter of 2007, when the figure was 1,154. That is a 7.0 per cent increase and the increase from the comparable quarter last year is of the same magnitude.

"I note that for the most recent quarter, there has been a small dip but that happens as numbers rise and fall with officers leaving or retiring and new recruits joining the service.

"The upward trend, however, continues and that is to be warmly welcomed.

"Increased police numbers are providing real benefits with falling crime and it was pleasing to read further statistics out recently which showed that gun crime is down right across the country with Tayside seeing a drop of 9 on the previous year, representing a fall of 18.5 per cent."
