Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP has published her submission to the Scottish Government Consultation on proposals put forward by Perth & Kinross Council, to the Commissioners for the Safeguarding of the Regalia, that the Stone of Destiny be relocated to Perth to form the centre-piece of the refurbished Perth City Hall.

Speaking today, as the Consultation comes to a close, Ms Cunningham said:

“I fully support the bid by Perth & Kinross Council to bring the Stone of Destiny back to Perthshire.

“In my view, it is important for historical artefacts to be retained as close as issues such as security and archaeological preservation will allow, to the place with which they are most strongly associated.  In this instance, that is, without a shadow of a doubt, Perthshire.

“The redevelopment of Perth City Hall provides the opportunity to create an individually designed facility for the protection, preservation and public display of this important national treasure, closer to its historic home.

“Not only will that better reflect the historic context of such an iconic relic, it also has the potential to have a positive economic impact on the whole of Perthshire, whereas its relocation from Edinburgh will have little appreciable effect on visitor numbers at Edinburgh Castle.”
