Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP has welcomed the fact that, as of this week, another social security benefit is being administered by the Scottish Government through Social Security Scotland.  The Funeral Support Payment is a one-off payment that provides people on low income benefits with a contribution towards the cost of a funeral.  It replaces and improves the Department for Work and Pensions’ Funeral Expenses Payment in Scotland.

 Ms Cunningham said:

“The Scottish Government is continuing to take on responsibility for more and more aspects of the social security system and I am really pleased that, under an SNP Government, the transition has been seen as an opportunity to improve the support that people receive.

“The latest benefit to transfer over is the Funeral Expenses Payment, which was previously administered by the DWP but will now be delivered as the Funeral Support Payment by Social Security Scotland for the Scottish Government.

“Planning a loved one’s funeral can be a stressful and expensive business and this payment makes an important contribution to alleviating some of the practical financial concerns that people might have.

“Importantly, the Scottish Government have made improvements to the payment, including a more flexible and sensitive approach to determining the ‘nearest relative’ who is responsible for the costs of the funeral.

“This change, alone, is expected to widen eligibility for the payment by around 40% and help reach an estimated 5,000 people each year.

“The Scottish Government has also committed to faster processing times for completed applications and to annually reviewing and uprating the flat-rate element of the benefit to take account of inflation.”

NOTE: As with all of our benefits, the Scottish Government wants to make sure the take-up of the Funeral Support Payment is fully maximised. To support this, a range of materials and communication products have been produced, which can be found here.

Information about the new benefit will also be communicated through social media channels (@SocSecScot on Twitter and on Social Security Scotland’s Facebook page).

Applications can be made online here, through Social Security Scotland’s Freephone helpline on 0800 182 2222 or via a traditional paper application form.
