Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP has hit out at claims made by Ochil and South Perthshire MP Luke Graham regarding the sources of funding for local investment projects.

The claims were made in a column for the Perthshire Advertiser published on 21st June.

Ms Cunningham said:

“I would not normally comment on what another politician writes in a newspaper column but the bending of the truth employed by Mr Graham is so cynical that it needs to be challenged.

“He rightly welcomes – as I have also done – the recent allocations of £800,000 and £600,000 investments in projects for Kinross and Crieff respectively but he fails to acknowledge that the financing of those investments comes directly from a specific Scottish Government fund for town centre improvements.

“That oversight would be enough of a glaring omission, but it comes on top of another bit of sleight of hand that needs to be exposed.  Earlier in his column, by cherry-picking the figures he used, he gives the impression that the UK Government is entirely responsible for the Tay Cities Deal funding that is coming to Perth and Kinross.

“The facts, of course, are that the UK Government came up short and, because of the need for private sector match-funding, effectively deprived the Tay Cities Deal of one hundred million pounds.

“Mr Graham’s attempts to claim undue credit for Westminster regarding investment in this area is not only based on mis-representation, it is also entirely ironic when you consider the massive damage that our local economy faces by the way in which his Tory Government is determined to send us all hurtling over the cliff edge of a No Deal Brexit.

“Brexit Britain and the clueless Tory Government at its helm is very bad news indeed for the economy of Perthshire South & Kinross-shire.”
