Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP has called on Perth & Kinross Council to ditch any thoughts they might have of selling advertising space in local schools.

She said:

“I have been contacted by constituents very exercised at reports that Perth & Kinross Council are looking at the possibility of selling advertising space in local schools.

“There is genuine anger at these plans, and understandably so.  Children and their parents are bombarded by advertising everywhere they turn these days and, until now, our schools have been a haven from that pressure.

“We want children to regard schools as places where the information they receive can be totally trusted, indeed it is in our schools that they should be developing the skills of critical thinking that will allow them to properly challenge the assertions and manipulations on which much advertising depends.

“Now, I don’t imagine that when the Council talk of selling advertising space in our schools they are talking about billboards instead of blackboards or teachers decked out like Formula 1 drivers but I really do not think that there is any place for commercial advertising in our schools.

“The Council really must think again and ditch this idea.”
