Roseanna welcomes improved flood warning system

The Scottish National Party’s Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perthshire South & Kinross-shire has welcomed an announcement made by Mr Paul Wheelhouse MSP, Minister for Environment and Climate Change, during a visit to the Scottish Flood Forecasting & Warning Centre in Perth, today (Monday) during which they heard of SEPA's plans for an improved flood warning system for both the River Spey and Ruchil Water and a new coastal flood warning scheme for the Firth of Forth and Firth of Tay.

Welcoming this good news for the people of Comrie following the recent flooding by the Ruchill Water, Ms Cunningham said:

"This is excellent news and I am delighted that the Minister has taken the opportunity to visit my constituency where we were both able to learn more about the work done here at the Flood Forecasting & Warning Centre and to hear this significant announcement from SEPA which the Scottish Government is funding.

"Forewarned is fore-armed and we have seen very clearly this year that flood-threatened communities across Scotland need all the early warning advice that they can get.

"I visited Comrie on the morning after the recent flooding there to see for myself the extent of the damage caused and to witness the cleanup operation there.

"The improved warning scheme will give those at risk the opportunity for far more direct contact than has previously been possible by providing advance warning of flooding direct to registered mobiles or landlines.

"This direct contact could easily mean the vital difference between being able to protect your home and seeing floodwater cause hundreds or thousands of pounds worth of damage."
