Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP has written to MMRD UK Ltd, the parent company that owns Stuart Crystal, expressing her concern at their announcement that the Stuart Crystal shop and café in Crieff are to close next month.

Ms Cunningham has put a number of questions to the executives behind the closure decision and has invited them to come to Crieff to discuss the situation.

She said:

“Stuart Crystal has been a part of the retail, leisure and tourism sector n Crieff for many years.  Its loss will be felt very keenly by locals and visitors alike and I want to ensure that all possible avenues to avoid this closure have been investigated.

“The only reason given by MMRD UK Ltd for the closure is the cost of repairing the building and that, for me, raises a number of questions which I have directed to Christian Bachler, their Senior Vice President for English & Crystal Living.  I have also invited him and his colleagues to come to Crieff to discuss the situation.

“For example, I want to know the extent of the work required, what plans they have for the property after closing the shop and café and whether they gave any consideration at all to relocating within the local area before deciding to shut up shop.  Have they had any discussions with the Economic Development department at Perth & Kinross Council, for example?

“I want MMRD UK Ltd to reverse this decision but my primary concern is for those most directly affected, the staff who work at Stuart Crystal.  If this closure does go ahead, I want to know what they intend to do to assist those employees in finding alternative employment.”
