The Scottish National Party’s Ms Roseanna Cunningham,  SNP candidate for Perthshire South & Kinross-shire, has welcomed the commitment of Perth & Kinross Council to ensuring that all its employees are paid at least the level of the Living Wage.

Ms Cunningham said:

“I am delighted that Perth & Kinross Council has become an officially accredited Living Wage Employer, paying all of its directly employed staff at least the Scottish Local Government Living Wage – which is the Living Wage plus 1%.

“Not only that, but they are also committed to working with their regular contractors to ensure that, by December of next year, all of their staff will also be paid the Living Wage.

“This is the SNP - in government and in administration on Perth & Kinross Council - delivering Fair Pay for the Fair City – and beyond.

“These decisions will have a positive and very welcome impact on the wage packets of the Council’s lowest paid staff and, importantly, it also means that the Council is showing a lead to other employers in this area.

“In my role as the Scottish Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Fair Work, I have been championing the cause of encouraging employers of all kinds to sign up as Living Wage Employers so I am particularly pleased that my local Council is one of the first five Scottish Local Authorities to secure accreditation from the Poverty Alliance.

“Our initial target of having 500 Scottish firms paying the Living Wage has been surpassed and we have now raised the ambition to 1,000 Living Wage employers by next autumn.

“Indeed, Scotland now has a higher proportion of workers earning at or more than the Living Wage than any other nation in the UK.”
