Campainging in Crieff today (Saturday) the Scottish National Party’s Ms Roseanna Cunningham, SNP Candidate for Perthshire South & Kinross-shire, expressed her disappointment at the decision by SSE to close every one of their retail shops operated under the Scottish Hydro Electric brand.

“I understand that people’s shopping habits are changing fast but I am very disappointed at the decision by SSE to shut down the domestic retail side of their business.

“This news will be greeted with dismay by many in this constituency - not least, of course, those who work in the shops in Crieff and Perth.

“While I accept it will not be possible to change SSE’s mind regarding this decision I do want to find out more from them what plans they have to assist their staff into other employment.

“Given that they are shutting down their entire retail network the chances of similar alternative positions being offered within the company are not high so the offer ‘to redeploy staff within the SSE group where possible’ would – at the very least – require employees to undergo a certain degree of retraining.

“I want to know what efforts have been – and could still be – made to offer the premises and goodwill of the business to other retailers, something that would have held out the possibility of staff that they could retain their jobs with a minimum of disruption.”
