Roseanna joins in with Auchterarder's big play

The Scottish National Party's Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perthshire South & Kinross-shire, spent time yesterday with Perth and Kinross Council's Childcare Strategy Team, who were in Auchterarder to promote play to parents and children.

Speaking after the visit, Roseanna said:

"The Scottish Government announced in June a National Play Strategy and the plan – the most progressive of its kind in the UK - recognises that as well as being fun, play is integral to a child's development and their physical, emotional, social and brain development is linked to it.

"They say that all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and in fact research suggests that play really gets to work - where play is successful in improving skills and behaviours it has the potential to unlock economic returns in the region of £9 for every £1 invested.

"The Scottish Government's vision for play will improve young lives and is the latest step towards making Scotland the best place to grow up. An action plan will follow this autumn, setting out how the strategy will be implemented.

"Perth and Kinross Council have employed Terri Higgins to implement the National Play Strategy and the Childcare Strategy Team is offering families with children aged 3 - 12 years old opportunities to have fun outdoors with sand, water, mud, den building and much more during the school holidays.

"I was lucky enough to be able to attend the play day in Auchterarder and it really was a fantastic opportunity for children and adults to rediscover the real value which play has. Children of all ages relaxed and enjoyed themselves using a host of different play materials.

"The mud kitchen proved particularly popular underlining the fact that play and educational development does not have to rely on expensive tools or resources.

"Terri and the team will be at locations throughout Perth and Kinross over the holiday period and I would encourage all families to come along and rediscover the value of playing."
