Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP has congratulated a local butchery business for an innovative promotion of their business and product as Simon Howie Ltd announced that they teamed up with space education and research firm Stratonauts to launch a haggis to the edge of space from Simon Howie’s headquarters in Dunning.
Ms Cunningham said:
“All credit to the team at Simon Howie Ltd. for their innovation, imagination and willingness to go that extra mile - and more - to publicise their business and promote their product.
“Sending a haggis into space is quite the first, and this particular beastie was clearly ‘aboon them a’ as it soared to a height equivalent to that of four Everests. From that elevation, even the tallest mountain in the world must have seemed like a very ‘distant hill’ indeed.
“Like so much else affected by the global pandemic, haggis-makers will doubtless have seen a big drop in demand this year – although not perhaps as terrifying as the prospect of a half-kilo haggis plummeting back to earth!
“Nevertheless, Simon Howie’s team will have produced over one million earth-bound haggises and fed over three million customers this year. I am pleased that my constituency is home not just to the first haggis to make in to space but also such a successful business that is determined to put something back into the community from which it has grown.
“Because, what might seem a frivolous endeavour has a serious intent behind it with Simon Howie intending to run workshops, in partnership with Stratonauts, in local primary schools to boost interest in science and encourage more pupils into science, technology, engineering and maths-related careers.
“Meanwhile, the space haggis can take its place beside the Dupplin Cross and the Maggie Wall Cairn as a Dunning tourist attraction.”
