Roseanna expresses anger and disappointment as RBS announce plans to close Crieff branch

The Scottish National Party's Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perthshire South & Kinross-shire has expressed her disappointment and anger at the decision, revealed to her today (Tuesday), by the Royal Bank of Scotland that they are to close their branch in Crieff.

The Crieff branch has been operating from temporary premises for some time following structural damage to their own premises caused by the disrepair of the Drummond Arms Hotel.

Ms Cunningham said:

"I was very disappointed to learn of this decision by RBS. I had been in touch with the local manager trying to arrange a meeting to discuss their situation since it was clearly unsustainable for them to continue to carry out their business from a portakabin but this news has come as an absolute bombshell.

"I have been communicating with RBS representatives through today and I am no looking to set up a meeting to discuss this latest news and I will, of course, be doing all I can to try and persuade them to change their mind as I believe the closure of the Crieff Branch will be a real blow to RBS customers in Crieff.

"My anger, however, is not directed so much at the RBS as at the owner – or immediate past owner - of the Drummond Arms Hotel whose abject failure to maintain, let alone redevelop as promised, this historic Crieff building has to a great extent forced the hand of RBS.

"Sohan Singh, who is a Labour Councillor in Glasgow, bought the Drummond Arms and promised much but delivered absolutely nothing. I am led to understand that he may have used some sort of financial mechanism to distance himself from responsibility for the Drummond Arms but he cannot be allowed to escape the moral responsibility for what is going on.

"For an elected representative to treat any community with the disdain that Cllr Singh has shown towards Crieff is an absolute disgrace and if his attitude towards his own ward is in any way similar, then the people of North East Glasgow are being very ill-served indeed.

"I am issuing an open challenge to Cllr Singh to face up to his responsibilities and ensure the work that needs done to make the Drummond Arms and attached properties safe is carried out as soon as possible."
