JOBS THREAT AT HORSECROSS

Perthshire politicians have expressed their disappointment at news that Horsecross Arts – the charity that runs both Perth Theatre and Perth Concert Hall - have opened consultation on potential redundancies due to the ongoing uncertainty around the performing arts as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Mr John Swinney MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Perthshire North constituency, said:

“This is clearly devastating news both for the affected employees, and for Perth as a whole. Perthshire is renowned for its strong cultural and artistic scene, and it is a source of great regret that the necessary safety measures put in place to tackle COVID are putting significant strain on such a valued part of our economy.

“Should any affected constituents have specific concerns that they feel I can assist with, I would ask that they contact my office in the first instance.”

Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire, continued:

“It is very troubling to hear about the news of potential redundancies at Horsecross Arts. I know the team extremely well and I am certain that the decision to begin this consultation will not have been taken lightly.

“Theatres and other indoor entertainment spaces are going to be some of the hardest hit, as we know that their business model does not lend itself well to some of the necessary restrictions that we have all had to make. My office will always be available to those who require assistance as a result of this news.”

Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Perthshire South & Kinross-shire constituency, concluded:

“This is very disappointing news indeed. Both Perth Theatre and the Concert Hall are massively important parts of the Perthshire cultural scene and key contributors to attracting visitors to the area. There is absolutely no doubt that all venues like theatres and concert halls are going to face major issues and I hope that a way can be found to keep them ticking over until large indoor gatherings are possible once more.

“I have no doubt that I will have constituents affected by this news and, like my colleagues, my office stands ready to offer whatever assistance we can.”
