DEATH OF MONSIGNOR CHARLES HENDRY

Local parliamentarians have expressed their sorrow at the recent death of the Right Reverend Monsignor Charles Hendry.

Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP said:

“Decades of service to the people and communities of Perth, and particularly in the parishes of Mary Magdalene and St John the Baptist which he served as parish priest, meant that Monsignor Hendry was well known throughout the city.  A widely admired and respected priest, he was a truly lovely man and I was so sorry to hear of his death.”

“Whilst I frequently met him in my official capacity and appreciated his input in that regard, there were other, different, conversations which I always enjoyed.  His personal experiences and reflections on faith never failed to make me think – exactly what a good Pastor will do.”

Mr Pete Wishart MP, Member of Parliament for Perth & North Perthshire, added:

“I was hugely saddened to hear of the passing of Monsignor Charles Hendry. His career with the Catholic Church spanned 65 years and there will be countless people whom he inspired, consoled and guided during these years. It will be all the more difficult for those that knew him right now, because they will be unable to pay tribute to him in the way that they would like. My thoughts are with all those that had the privilege to know him.”

Mr John Swinney MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Perthshire North constituency, added:

“This is a profoundly sad loss for Perthshire, and I am sure that I speak for so many of my constituents when I pay tribute to the life of service that Monsignor Charles Hendry led for well over 60 years.

“He was a source of both strength and wisdom within the community, and also a thoroughly kind and decent man. My thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time, and I am sorry that they will not be able to fully pay tribute to his life due to the current restrictions in place.”
