Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP has welcomed new figures that show over 300 new-build social housing homes were completed in the Perth & Kinross local authority area last year, nearly a third of all new-build properties.

The latest statistics from the Scottish Government show that over 9,300 affordable homes were delivered in 2019 across the country, an increase of more than 25% since 2016.

306 homes for social rent were completed in Perth & Kinross last year – of which 145 were new council homes and 161 were housing association properties. The total number of new-build homes was 1047.

Ms Cunningham said:

“Under the SNP, the Scottish Government has made the delivery of thousands of new affordable homes a priority.

“The pressure on the social rent sector was particularly acute here in Perth & Kinross, as I can testify from the people coming to my surgeries and contacting my office, desperate for an affordable home, appropriate to their needs.

“The social rental sector had the rug pulled out from under it by Thatcher in the 1980s and the problem just got worse and worse from then on.  Thankfully the legislative changes that the SNP has introduced means that council house building has been resumed and many more families can put out the welcome mat.

“Just last year alone, we’ve seen 1047 new homes completed in Perth & Kinross, and of that number more than 300 nearly a third – are for social rent.

“On top of our commitment to deliver 50,000 affordable homes, we’re helping first-time buyers get on the property ladder by lending them a chunk of their deposit.

“I’m proud that this SNP Government is getting on with the day job, and is, quite literally, building for the future of Scotland.”
