Work Placement Scandal: Roseanna writes to Job Centre Plus

“WESTMINSTER ACTIVELY DEPRIVING THE UNEMPLOYED OF PAID JOBS”

The Scottish National Party’s Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perthshire South & Kinross-shire, has today (Monday)

written to the Manager of the Job Centre Plus in Perth top ask what the practice is locally following press reports that job centre managers are being pressurised into converting job vacancies to unpaid work experience places, in order to satisfy Westminster government targets.

Ms Cunningham said:

“The reports that job centre managers are coming under pressure to convert job vacancies into unpaid work experience places, in order to meet some Westminster government target, are hugely concerning, and a dreadful indictment of the Westminster government approach to tackling unemployment.

“People who could and should be in paid employment right now, appear to be being forced to carry out unpaid work experience – even if they’re more than qualified for the job.

“What this means is that Westminster is actively depriving the unemployed of the possibility of paid jobs.

“I want to know whether this despicable practice which has been uncovered is going on in Perth.

“Are large retailers being encouraged to advertise seasonal positions as work experience as opposed to paid employment? What is the uptake of work experience this December as opposed to December 2011?

“These are questions to which we deserve honest answers.

“It is truly shocking that job centres are set an unpaid work experience target, yet they have no target for getting people into work.”

“Government policies should provide a bridge out of benefits not a block on better incomes.

“Westminster’s priorities are not Scotland’s priorities.  Tory values are not Scotland’s values.  It would be far better for these decisions to be taken in Scotland, by an independent Parliament, where we could join up our job centre policies with everything else that the Scottish Government is doing to get Scotland’s people into work."
