REDESIGN OF ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY COULD SEE 400 MORE OPS PER YEAR

Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP is highlighting to constituents a series of engagement events which are taking place as part of the consultation on proposals to redesign orthopaedic services in Tayside.

Ms Cunningham said:

“As part of its wider "Transforming Tayside" plans, NHS Tayside is putting forward changes to the way in which they deliver orthopaedic surgery.  While all unplanned orthopaedic surgical trauma operations will be carried out at Ninewells, there will be centres of excellence established for planned surgery at Perth Royal Infirmary and at Stracathro Hospital.

“All patients undergoing unplanned surgery and who require further care would be transferred to a hospital closer to home within two to three days of surgery, assuming they are well enough to be moved.

“Planned operations are the most common type of orthopaedic surgery.  These proposals would not only see more planned orthopaedic operations being carried out in Perth Royal Infirmary, but are also predicted to result in around 400 more operations per year and a reduction in waiting times as a consequence.

“It is important that patients and staff, as well as their families and members of the public, have the opportunity to be informed about and involved in decisions of this nature.  I am therefore pleased that NHS Tayside is holding a range of public engagement events, and I would encourage interested individuals to get involved.

“There are three main "Transforming Tayside" events, with one being held on Saturday 24th August at North Inch Community Campus.

“There are also smaller community pop-up information stands appearing across Tayside to allow people to find out more and give their feedback, at venues including Crieff Community Hospital; St Margaret’s Community Hospital, Aucherarder; and Perth Royal Infirmary.”
