COMMUNICATION ISSUES NEED ADDRESSED FOLLOWING AUCHTERARDER GARAGE EXPLOSION BUT NO CAUSE FOR CONCERN OVER ASBESTOS

Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP has been in touch with Perth & Kinross Council following a garage explosion in Auchterarder on Sunday 23rd September.

Passing on concerns about poor communication which has resulted in confusion amongst local residents, Ms Cunningham said:

“It must have been very scary indeed for local residents when a garage in the Feus area of Auchterarder exploded in the early hours of Sunday morning, requiring some to be evacuated from their homes.

“The fire itself was dealt with effectively by the Scottish Fire & Rescue Service.  There were, thankfully, no casualties and, as far as I am aware, no further damage to property, although pieces of the garage are now strewn around the area.

“The main concerns I have been hearing from residents relates to the lack of information regarding how to deal with those pieces of debris, because word had got around about the presence of asbestos which has led to anxiety and uncertainty.

“I have raised the concerns about communication with the local council and I am pleased to be able to inform people that while asbestos was indeed used in the construction of the roof panels of the garage, the material consisted of less than 1% asbestos and 99% cement.

“The standard advice given by the Fire Service regarding any Asbestos Containing Material (ACM) is that people wash their boots or shoes or leave them at the door but assurances have been issued by a range of bodies that the risk to public health from any ACM in this event was deemed to be very, very low indeed.

“I am happy to help share that information and I hope that, perhaps, the local authority will take on board the lesson about the need for improved communication with the local neighbourhood following incidents of this nature.”
