ROSEANNA VISITS LETHAM SPORTS CLUB

Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP has visited Letham Sports Club’s football summer holiday camp at 7 Acres Park where she met with club representatives and the young people involved. While there she heard about the impact of the club on local young people and the club’s plans for the future.

Speaking following the visit, Ms Cunningham said:

“I am always so impressed with everyone involved with Letham Sports Club. The club has been active for nearly 60 years and is very much a part of the community here.

Letham SC small“Not only do the younger age groups come along for the summer camps but older children are also able to use the all-weather pitch from 2pm onwards at a cost of only £1. While this is a nominal fee it instils the idea that the pitch needs to be funded and well maintained, and I am told that the young people take great care of the pitch, recognising that it is more than just a place to play football but a facility that belongs to them and to the whole community.

“This community spirit is also evident in the clubhouse where parents of those using the facility can relax on couches donated by the local community and enjoy a cup of tea from the on-site tuck shop.

“With 30 boys’ teams and 6 girls’ teams as well as a pan-disability team and a new walking football project on the cards, the club is extremely busy and growing from year to year. This continued growth means that new facilities are required and it is hoped that a new clubhouse and tuck shop facility closer to the pitch can be developed - at present a portacabin serves as the main clubhouse and a shipping container is in use as a changing room.

“Of course, the growth of the club and ambitions for the future are championed by the wonderful team of volunteers responsible for coaching the teams, running the club, and undertaking fundraising and local engagement activities. These individuals devote their time and energy to ensuring the legacy of this community hub and the local area and wider community owe them a debt of thanks for all they do.

“I very much look forward to seeing how the plans for the facilities at 7 Acres progress and will be happy to do all I can to support this next exciting phase of the club’s development.”
