BREXIT EFFECT: SCOTTISH WORKERS ALREADY LOSE A WEEK’S WAGES

Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP has highlighted a new economic report which suggests that Brexit has already cost workers in the UK the equivalent of a week’s wages due to rising inflation – with Scotland amongst the hardest hit.

The report, conducted by researchers at the London School of Economics, found that the impact of Brexit-driven inflation is equivalent to a £448 pay cut for an average worker – while residents in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have been worst affected.

The damning analysis comes as the UK government claimed, in response to SNP calls for transparency, that releasing analysis on the impact of Brexit on food prices may weaken the Government’s hands in negotiations.

Ms Cunningham said:

“This is a truly damning report that exposes the real damage caused by Brexit even before we’ve left the EU.  The figures from the London School of Economics show that there could be a cost equivalent to a week’s wages for the average worker.

“The danger is that this is the tip of the iceberg. A Tory no-deal Brexit with the very real threat of tariffs slapped on imports and food left rotting at customs points threatens to be a dystopian nightmare.

“This research shows that food bills are already soaring for ordinary households throughout Perthshire South & Kinross-shire – crashing out of Europe with no deal will only see that situation get far, far worse.

“Yet the Tories have repeatedly refused to say what evidence they have about the impact leaving the EU will have on the cost of food – leaving the public in the dark.

“It’s time for the Tories to rule out a hard Brexit, commit to staying in the single market and start being honest with the public.”
