ROSEANNA PRAISES LIVING WAGE EMPLOYERS; URGES OTHERS TO SIGN UP

Roseanna Cunningham MSP has welcomed the news that the number of accredited Living Wage employers in Scotland has now reached 900, praised the 23 local businesses who are part of that number, and urged other urged other businesses in Perth & Kinross to sign up to the Scottish Living Wage and help take the total up to 1,000.

The Scottish Living Wage is independently calculated, based on the cost of living – with the real Living Wage currently at £8.45, above the minimum wage of £7.50 for workers aged over 25.

Ms Cunningham said:

“It is great news that the number of accredited Living Wage employers in Scotland has reached 900 and that there are 23 Perth & Kinross businesses on that list.  I want to see the number of Living Wage employers grow and it would be wonderful to see local employers playing a substantial part in taking that total to the next level and helping to hit 1000.

“I would strongly encourage all employers in Perth & Kinross to look into the real benefits of becoming an accredited Living Wage employer.

“I know there are businesses out there that already pay their employees above the living wage, and to them I say: that is brilliant, now get the accreditation, show your employees and your customers that this is important to you.

“To those employers not yet able to qualify for accreditation: paying the Living Wage makes sense - it’s an investment in people and all the evidence shows it leads to increased productivity and reduced staff absence and turnover.

“The real Living Wage can make a huge difference to both workers and employers and yet around 20 per cent of Scotland’s workforce earn less than the real Living Wage. With low pay one of the main drivers of in-work poverty, it’s vital that employers who can pay the real Living Wage do so. ”
