Roseanna views historic Jacobite map

RARE HISTORIC ARTEFACT WITH STRONG PERTHSHIRE CONNECTIONS

During a visit to the offices of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society in Perth, the Scottish National Party’s Ms Roseanna Cunningham MSP, Member of the Scottish Parliament for Perthshire South & Kinross-shire, was shown a fascinating map, dating from Jacobite times, which the Society have in their collection.

Speaking after her visit, Roseanna said:

“It really was a wonderful opportunity to hold in my hands such a rare historic artefact and the map itself is a fantastic piece of work, truly fascinating.  I am grateful to the Royal Scottish Geographical Society for giving me the chance to examine it so closely.

“The timing is particularly opportune given that we were viewing this map of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s travels, which had been in his possession, just a day before the anniversary of his arrival in Perth on September 15, 1745.

“Crieff and Perth are both marked on the map as are many other places connected with the Prince’s time in Scotland.”

“This is a very rare map, made unique by the inscription which states that it was retrieved from Rome, from ‘the house of our unfortunate exiled King’ and delivered into the care of MacPherson of Cluny.

“I am pleased to say that many more folk will also have the opportunity to view the map as it will be accessible to the public on Doors Open Day on Saturday 22nd September, between 10am and 4pm in the Fair Maid's House, with the Society's collection experts on hand to explain its details.”
