RAPE CLAUSE DEBATE GIVES A PEEK BEHIND THE CURTAIN AT THE TRUE FACE OF THE TORIES: STILL THE NASTY PARTY

Perthshire politicians, Roseanna Cunningham MSP and John Swinney MSP, have expressed their disgust and outrage at the actions of Conservative MSPs who voted to back the rape clause following a debate in the Scottish Parliament.

Ms Cunningham said:

“We got a real peek behind the curtain this evening.  Not only did the Tories try and defend the indefensible today but they did so in a manner that was a mockery of the parliamentary process.

“Speaker after speaker from the SNP, the Greens, Lib Dems and Labour, spoke movingly and passionately against the tax credit family cap and its abhorrent rape clause.  The Tories sat and stared at their desks and those that spoke refused all interventions, all attempts to debate their support for this awful legislation.”

Mr Swinney, Member of the Scottish Parliament for the Perthshire North constituency, added:

“What we saw from the Tories in the Scottish Parliament this evening was a shameful performance and I urge everyone to look beyond the photocalls and see the real face of the Scottish Tories.

“Don’t be fooled, with their behaviour in the rape clause debate, the Tories have reminded us all that they are still – as Theresa May herself once described them - the nasty party.”
